Implant Crown
Implant crowns can be used when someone is missing one or more teeth. The implant is a titanium post that is surgically implanted into the bone under the gum line and serves as a “root” for the replacement crown. This procedure is done by the surgeon. The crown is made to look like a natural tooth and fills the space left by the missing tooth. One of the benefits of an implant crown is that it restores the individual open space where a bridge must utilize the adjacent teeth as abutments.
Adequate bone and healthy gums are a requirement for an implant crown. Bone that is too thin or soft may not be able to support the implant and may require a bone graft. The natural teeth and supporting tissues adjacent to the implant must also be in good health.
There are several steps to placing an implant crown. The implant itself is made of titanium and is placed into the jawbone. Once this has healed, the abutment, which connects the implant to the crown, is attached to the implant with a screw. The crown, which is the part that looks like a tooth, is then attached to the abutment. The time frame for all of this work depends on several factors ranging from five or six months to a year or more when bone needs to be built up first.
